Tradeweb Launches Muni Sweep, a New Trading Protocol for the Municipal Bond Market
Tradeweb Markets Inc. has launched Muni Sweep, a session-based trading protocol to make municipal bond trading faster and efficient. The new workflow brings municipal bond inventory into a short, defined trading window. It helps market participants reduce risk tie-up and improve turnover. Muni Sweep strives to give market makers a structured way to assess large books of municipal bond line items and act on relevant trading opportunities within minutes.
More on Muni Sweep
Traditional bid-wanted workflows can tie up risk for several hours. Muni Sweep aspires to reduce this period to just a few minutes by concentrating trading interest into a single session. During the session, participants can review available opportunities, accept relevant interest and compare trading levels against Tradeweb's composite pricing before the window closes. It gives market makers a faster way to evaluate and act on large inventories without committing extended periods to the process.
Participants can bring their inventory into a Muni Sweep session by providing the CUSIP, size and an optional mark yield or price. Then, Tradeweb provides a composite price to help users assess available levels and make decisions within the session window. Also, the protocol supports inventory uploads, filtering and sorting. Users can import and export data via Excel, making it easier to review large numbers of line items.
Electronic Trading Activity
The launch comes as the municipal bond market keeps experiencing strong activity and elevated electronic trading adoption. According to the Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board (MSRB), the market recorded 17.6 million trades in 2025. This marked the fourth consecutive record year and conveyed a 22% increase from the previous year. Electronic trading market share, as reported by Coalition Greenwich, also increased from 16% in 2022 to nearly 21% in Q2 2026.
Tradeweb has recorded growth in municipal bond trading activity. Its municipal bond average daily volume (ADV) reached a record high in Q3 2026. In September 2026, ADV increased 40% year-over-year to $729 million. Market makers need faster ways to evaluate large inventories, reduce risk tie-up and manage positions efficiently as trading activity grows. Muni Sweep strives to address these requirements via a shorter and more structured trading process.
What Executive Says
Troy Dixon, Managing Director and Co-Head of Global Markets at Tradeweb, explained that Muni Sweep responds to the growing need for faster and structured inventory management. He stressed that Tradeweb has already seen the session-based protocol gain traction across other products on its platforms. Bringing the same approach to municipal bonds is a natural extension of its current technology and shows the company's ongoing investment in workflow solutions that support client businesses.
