HKEX Launches S&P 500 & HKEX Tech 100 Index in Partnership with S&P Dow Jones Indices

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) has launched the S&P 500 & HKEX Tech 100 Index in collaboration with S&P Dow Jones Indices (S&P DJI). The new co-branded index merges exposure to leading US-listed companies and major technology companies listed in Hong Kong in one benchmark.

Combining Equity Markets

The index brings together two market exposures to offer investors broader diversification opportunities. It blends the growth potential of Hong Kong’s technology and innovation companies with the scale and diversity of the US large-cap market. The index allocates approximately 60% to the HKEX Tech 100 Index and 40% to the S&P 500. It also rebalances quarterly to maintain its allocation.

Technology and innovation companies are growing in Hong Kong’s equity market. Investors are looking in markets more and more for opportunities and diversification. The new index will handle this demand by providing exposure to different geographies, sectors and growth sources via one benchmark.

ETFs and Portfolio Diversification

Launched on 30 September 2026, the S&P 500 & HKEX Tech 100 Index supports the eligibility of ETFs tracking it for probable inclusion in Southbound Stock Connect. The index also strives to facilitate portfolio diversification and cross-market capital flows. Investors can get exposure to US and Hong Kong equity markets through one benchmark.

Understanding the Indices

HKEX Tech 100 Index

The HKEX Tech 100 Index was launched in December 2025. It measures the performance of 100 of the largest Hong Kong-listed companies with considerable exposure to six technology themes:

  1. Artificial intelligence
  2. Biotech and pharmaceuticals
  3. Electric vehicles and smart driving
  4. Information technology
  5. Internet
  6. Robotics

The index provides exposure to Hong Kong-listed companies operating across these technology and innovation segments.

S&P 500

The S&P 500 is widely viewed as a top gauge of large-cap US equities. It includes 500 leading companies and covers approximately 85% of the available US market capitalisation. At the end of 2025, approximately US$23 trillion was indexed or benchmarked to the S&P 500. It included roughly US$16 trillion in passively managed assets.

What Executives Say

Gregory Yu, HKEX Head of Markets, said the partnership shows how innovation is changing business growth and the way investors access opportunities. He stressed the blend of Hong Kong’s technology ecosystem and the breadth of the US large-cap market as a way to create new investment opportunities across markets. Yu also underlined HKEX’s commitment to expanding its index range and developing innovative solutions that support the long-term market growth.

Robert Ross, Chief Commercial Officer at S&P Dow Jones Indices, stressed the booming demand for benchmarks that merge complementary market exposures. He explained that the new index brings Hong Kong’s technology sector and leading US large-cap companies together in a transparent, rules-based framework. Ross also pointed to the role of benchmark innovation in connecting investment opportunities in different markets.
