Tradeweb Launches Spread Trading for European Credit Portfolios

Tradeweb has launched electronic spread trading for clients executing portfolio transactions in European credit bonds. This functionality lets clients price and execute portfolios as a spread to government bond benchmarks. The launch brings a transparent approach to manual workflows.

What Is Spread Trading?

Spread trading lets traders price European credit bond portfolios relative to underlying government bond benchmarks. It is already common in voice trading across Europe. It has also gotten wide adoption in the electronic U.S. investment-grade credit market. Tradeweb is expanding its portfolio trading offering for institutional investors by bringing this capability to European credit portfolios.

How the New Workflow Works

The solution lets traders negotiate pricing in basis points relative to a government bond benchmark. Traders can carry out the entire portfolio through a single workflow after they accept the spread. Each bond is quoted as a spread and fixed at execution. Then, the system combines all positions into one net outcome. Tradeweb also automatically calculates bond prices using data from its government bond marketplace. This reduces work.

Efficiency and Transparency

James Dale, Co-Head of International Developed Markets at Tradeweb, said the launch supports the company's plan to make trading workflows easier for clients. He explained that Tradeweb has already seen the benefits of spread trading in the U.S. market. The company will create a consistent pricing and execution framework by bringing the same capability to Europe. At the same time, it will reduce operational complexity and improve transparency.

Growing Portfolio Trading Business

Tradeweb became the first institutional platform to offer electronic portfolio trading for credit bonds in 2019. The global portfolio trading volumes on Tradeweb reached USD 258.4 billion in the first quarter of 2026. This represented a 40% increase compared to the previous quarter.
